To become a naturopath in Massachusetts, one follows an educational path very similar to those who are studying traditional medicine with a view to becoming a medical doctor. The first step for both is to get an undergraduate degree which is heavy on science. The next step for the naturopath is to study for four years at an accredited naturopathic medical school. Once the four years are over and the student has graduated, he must pass a licensing exam and in many states, obtain a license. Although residency is not a requirement, many naturopathic students do go on to a one or two year residency.

While medical doctors, upon graduation, know how to diagnose and treat the symptoms of a disease, the naturopath learns how to treat the cause of the disease. Naturopathic doctors believe in the ability of the individuals own body to heal itself. It is a holistic system of medicine where the doctor looks at the patient’s physical well being as well as his social, emotional and spiritual health.

In the first two years in naturopathic med school, the courses include anatomy, pathology, physiology, histology, immunology and pharmacology. These courses are the same as those studies in the first two years of education in a traditional medical college. The final two years of naturopathic training involve diverse subjects such as botanical medicine, homeopathy, naturopathic physical medicine and naturopathic principals.

Hands on experience in naturopathic studies are equally as important as those studying traditional medicine. Both will get two years as an intern to gain clinical experience. As they process through internship, they are under the direct supervision of licensed practitioners of either allopathic or naturopathic doctors. In this way, the students get an opportunity to visit with patients and learn how to diagnose and treat diseases according to the own principals and standards.

To become a medical doctor, residency is required; this is not the case with a naturopath Massachusetts area. Most young naturopathic doctors do accept a residency though as it gives them the opportunity to see private patients as well the chance to observe other doctors in practice. In some areas of the country, residents of naturopathy are allowed to supervise naturopathic medical students.
