When it comes to breast augmentation for the transgender woman, there are several types of breast implants that can be chosen. Having implants placed can be an important part of transition and will add shape, size, or fullness to the woman’s existing breasts. The procedures can help with confidence and create a better congruence between the woman’s identity and her body shape. We’ll look at the types of implants available and their benefits and drawbacks.
Silicone Transgender Breast Implants
With a silicone breast implant, the implant has been filled with a silicone gel. The fluid itself is a sticky, thick fluid that is similar to human fat. Many women consider this type of implant to be the most like natural breast tissue in terms of look and feel. This type of implant can be surgically inserted into women who are 22 years of age of older.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are a bit different and are simply filled with a sterile salt water. Whereas silicone implants are pre-filled, this type of implant is not. Instead, they are inserted while being empty and then are filled after they are in the correct location. This type of implant is able to be used on women over the age of 18 seeking breast augmentation.
Potential for Implant Rupture
Breast implant ruptures are uncommon, but if it does happen, the result is different based on the type of implant. If you have a saline implant that ruptures, you will notice a change in the shape and size of the implant. Your body will be capable of absorbed the saline that was inside the implant without trouble. However, removing the shell will require surgery. A new implant can be placed at the same time.
For silicone implants, it is harder to realize a rupture has occurred. A capsule around the implant will hold the gel so it does not reach your body. However, over time, this rupture type can sometimes cause thickening of the breast, breast pain, or changes in the size or shape of the breast. This may require removal of the implant, but a new implant can be placed at that time.
