The idea behind appetite suppressants of any type is that they work on chemicals in the brain, or on specific hormones or hormone receptors, to trick the body into feeling full or to curb hunger signals.
Types of Options
There are two basic categories of these types of diet support systems that are available to those interested in weight loss. The most common options are the over-the-counter products that are sold in health food stores and drugs stores and even online. These are marketed as herbal, holistic, naturopathic or even organic, but often their effectiveness is limited. Most of our clients have tried these in the past with some initial benefit but no long term appetite control. Our clients also have reported feeling jittery or anxious when taking these supplements and this is always a reason to immediately discontinue use.
The other option, and one that is only available through prescription by a doctor, are the medications that provide appetite suppression. These are very effective medications that, when used under a doctor’s supervision, can be highly beneficial in reducing hunger and cravings and allowing rapid weight loss. This is the type of appetite control that we can offer and one that really does work.
Before Meals
Some appetite suppressants are taken before meals, typically at least 30 minutes before eating and trigger the release of two specific hormones that are produced in the adrenal gland. These are epinephrine and noradrenalin, which cause the brain, central nervous system, heart rate and blood pressure to rise slightly.
As the body revs up the brain naturally shuts off the signaling system that tells the person to eat. In fact, our clients report that they simply don’t feel that urge to eat more than their eating plan indicates. It is as if they simply are full after a much smaller caloric intake then they would naturally have.
In addition to helping to curb appetite, there are some prescription appetite suppressants that also support the neurotransmitters in the brain that are linked with positive feelings and sensations. As these are enhanced the desire to eat for satisfaction, as in comfort foods and emotional eating, is also decreased.
